I’m working right now on this fairly large research project for school about the future of auto design. In an effort to, you know, learn something about the auto industry, I’ve got all sorts of Google Alerts set up, piping me stories throughout the day about everything from the GM bankruptcy proceedings to the aftermath of Cash for Clunkers. For no particular reason, I thought I’d share the stories from today that I found most interesting. Kind of gives you a snapshot of what’s going on right now:
- The crash test: ‘59 chevy vs. ‘09 chevy
- Good-looking Ford Fiesta to debut at LA Auto show
- Curmudgeonly (but probably correct) Holman Jenkins on the benefits of closing an auto plant
- The Toyota FT-86 hybrid sports car concept
- There’s also some kind of patent infringement suit being filed against Toyota. Has to do with hybrid technologies.
- Delphi is out of bankruptcy
- Auto sales in Brazil are way up. But maybe not for long.
- Ford’s using some kind of video game interface to test cabin noise before prototypes are ever built
- BMW’s little C1 scooter
- The SEAT Ibiza gets like a hundred miles to the gallon, sets records
- Audi set to build an electronic sports car (to compete with Tesla?)
- In this article: Tata Nanos are selling fast; Chinese auto manufacturer BYD wants to outsell Toyota in six years
- The Nissan LEAF will make its Canadian debut in British Columbia
- Honda has big (and little) things in store at the upcoming Tokyo Auto Show
- Honda’s closing its design studio in Germany
- Hybrids - cost less at pump, more at shop
- Commerce secretary says clean energy is key to the Midwest’s future
- VW will replace the Passat - “too small for the distances Americans drive” - with something bigger
- Finalists announced for Green Car of the Year @ LA Auto Show
- Kind of a strange post about the downside to r&d investment - localized booms & busts
- Thinking about the future of Volvo
