“belly” is a bad movie. but as far as opening scenes go, they don’t get much better than this.
if you have the time, check out the director’s commentary on the “belly” dvd. it’s basically just hype williams complaining about how the studio screwed him in the edit process. no explanations for the locations they used or the costumes or the dialogue. just a lot of “see…[exasperated sigh]…this scene should’ve been longer…” i wish more directors used the commentaries to settle scores. (or do they, and i’m just out of the loop?)
speaking of commentaries, michael mann’s commentary on the “public enemies” dvd is outstanding. breaks down the thought process and research that went into every shot in the movie. especially worth checking out if you’re into depression-era clothing, cars or architecture. mann’s knowledge is extensive, and it’s interesting to see how everything was filtered and refined into the hard-bitten, spare final product.
